oh yes.
I’m hooked. Alongside the Jetta, I do believe I require one.

Isn’t this a Passat with some marketing hyped, viscous coupled AWD?

In short, no.
In long, I'm far too lazy to bother.

All I’m seeing is some semi-sporty sedan that couldn’t keep up with the BMWs. I thought you were bored of the Jetta. This seems like it’d be the same thing except you bought into this “Quattro” marketing garbage. Sure it will be more analog, but it’s also longer and heavier. Not sure how old you are but why not save the 4 door sedans for when you’re old and with children and get a sports car this time around?

I owned an A6 with the same engine as the S4 right before the Jetta. There’s no Quattro “marketing garbage.” It’s called all wheel drive.
I don’t want a sports car and I need four doors. Maybe when I'm 50. But I'm not 50 and I'm not in the position to have kids right now.
And I literally couldn’t care less about BMW......

maybe I can clarify. The only thing that this and the Passat share in common is the nomenclature of models (that is B5, B6....) This here is a B5 S4. a 2.8L Twin-turbocharged AWD sports sedan that (while slower than comparable BMW’s) offered much better performance in poor weather conditions due to a true 40/60 front-rear AWD system (Quattro)

Similar platform it’s built on? Yes. Similar mechanically? No. Vicsous coupling? No, Torsen.

These things will always be so damn pretty. And the perfect size, with a (now) classic-style, well thought out interior with none of the modern jazz that you don’t need.

So you’re saying the S4 have their own platform and not a shared platform with the FWD Passat and A4?

If I remember right the B7(?) RS4 was the introduction of the 60:40 split. “True” Quattro is 50:50, but then the competition started doing awd, too, and they did it sportier and without the entirety of the engine in front of the front axle line. Audi has had to evolve Quattro to compete. A traditional (to Quattro) Torsen can do a 60:40, so it’s not really untrue to Quattro in my eyes.

All Audi platforms (well, not the R8) are fwd based platforms. The B5 Passat is more on an Audi platform versus the Audi being similar to a Passat. They’re different from most other cars in that the entire engine is forward of the front axle centerline. Outside of the US, you can still even buy (if I’m not mistaken) a fwd A8.
Passats now are more similar to their competition by having a transverse engine layout, which really makes more sense for fwd.
Subaru does awd similar to Quattro, with the entire engine in front of the front axle centerline, and that’s part of why they use a boxer engine layout.

it has a severely tweaked version of the same platform, but it comes from the same family as the Passat.
Think of it as 2 cousins twice removed. One's a bodybuilder and the other is a overweight accountant

Fellas, this is an S4 we’re talking about, a hot version of a midsize sedan... It is inherently flawed by starting off with a bloated midsize sedan chassis. You can tweak that all you want but the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. BMW has RWD platforms that favor performance over packaging and cost, unlike Audi. Just to list a few major chassis advantages that BMW had over this Audi; BMW has hardly any front overhang, the strut towers allow for absurd amounts of caster, the engine is front-mid mounted, the steering rack is mounted in front of the engine, the weight distribution is infinitely better. This is before we get to the tuning of the suspension and alignment details, which truthfully, is BMW’s trump card. That is why Audi could never come close to the car they benchmarked. Yeah you can throw out the argument that “oh in terrible weather, it’s better because AWD!” but really that is barely any consolation.
In short, it is a fwd midsize family car that swallowed a few more differentials and traded in a bigger engine and firmer suspension.

I was asking sarcastically. I know all about Audi’s terrible weight distribution and engine placement.

I have 4 friends with B5 S4s in various stages of modification from stock to big turbo swapped. They are some fun fun cars. Its just hard to find a clean low miles example anymore, once they get up in miles the maintenance is a killer. If youre willing to search and willing to deal with some quirks they are a fantastic car.
Ill always have a special spot in my heart for them, the FIRST car I ever went fast in, and the car that truly sparked my love of cars was an imola yellow stage 2 2002 B5 S4. Love it.
